In a recent press conference held in Toluca, President Claudia Sheinbaum shared vital updates on security in México state, a region home to nearly 17 million residents. As the state grapples with crime, new statistics indicate a significant decrease in homicide rates, bringing a glimmer of hope to daily life in communities once burdened by violence.
The National Public Security System chief, Marcela Figueroa, reported an average of 2.8 homicides per day in June, reflecting a remarkable 58% decrease from September 2024. This drop is attributed to a “unified command” strategy implemented in 15 municipalities plagued by high crime rates. She emphasized that this year’s overall homicide rate represents the lowest figure recorded in 19 years, with a 68% reduction from 2013 levels.
In support of these statistics, Security Minister Omar García Harfuch announced that over 3,300 arrests for serious crimes have occurred since Sheinbaum took office in October 2024. This coordinated effort between the federal and state governments involved numerous operations that seized substantial amounts of drugs and firearms, aiming to restore safety for families in the area.
During the press conference, García Harfuch also addressed questions concerning prominent cartel figures, including Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, son of the infamous Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. While he refrained from detailing how close authorities are to apprehending Guzmán, he noted recent successes against his faction, including the elimination of key operatives.
The uncertainty surrounding Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada’s potential extradition was also discussed. García Harfuch indicated that whether Zambada could serve his life sentence in a Mexican prison would depend on decisions made by the Attorney General’s Office, although such a transfer currently seems unlikely.
