In a harrowing incident that has shaken the community, a 58-year-old man was arrested in Mexico City on Friday morning after authorities investigated the poisoning of four dogs in Parque España, located in the bustling Condesa neighborhood. This distressing event has left pet owners alarmed, prompting many to reconsider their routines as they navigate the park, once a favored space for dog walks and outdoor gatherings.
The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office (FGJ) is currently determining the man’s involvement while he faces charges for resisting arrest. Officials apprehended him following reports that he resembled a suspect seen in images shared on social media. He was aggressive toward police, but investigators are now focusing on surveillance footage and witnesses to establish a clearer picture of the events surrounding the poisonings.
Initial investigations suggest the motives may lie in personal conflict; pieces of sausage laced with highly toxic insecticide, methomyl, were allegedly left in retaliation for a previous dog attack on one of the man’s relatives. While this theory is being explored, authorities have yet to confirm it as the definitive motive. The Attorney General emphasized the need for continued diligence as they compile data and complaints from concerned residents.
In total, 14 suspected poisoned meat pieces were uncovered: four on Tuesday and another nine over the ensuing days, raising serious concerns about public safety in the area. Tragically, a mixed-breed dog succumbed to poisoning shortly after treatment at a local veterinary clinic, while two other dogs thankfully survived.
Cuauhtémoc borough Mayor Alessandra Rojo de la Vega has urged park visitors to remain vigilant, advising them to keep an eye on their pets and avoid letting them consume anything found on the ground. This caution reflects the broader fears among dog owners who now seek alternative routes for their daily walks, highlighting the community’s need for safety and reassurance amid the unsettling circumstances.
With a deep commitment to animal welfare and community safety, authorities continue to investigate this distressing matter to ensure that incidents like these do not happen again in our beloved parks.
