In a significant move against fuel theft schemes impacting Mexico’s economy, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has sanctioned two Mexican individuals and nine companies tied to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). This action aims to disrupt operations that not only enrich criminal organizations but also negatively affect the everyday lives of citizens through unfair fuel pricing and government revenue losses.
Oscar Guillermo Juraidini Silva, one of those sanctioned, allegedly plays a pivotal role in facilitating CJNG’s operations by managing various shell companies involved in fuel smuggling. The other individual, J. Refugio Ruiz Villagomez, is accused of knowingly transporting fuel from the U.S. into Mexico without the necessary permits.
The sanctions, which freeze all U.S. assets linked to these individuals and their businesses, are a result of strong collaboration between U.S. financial authorities and Mexico’s Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera (UIF). These efforts highlight the expanding criminal strategies of cartels, which are increasingly diversifying their operations beyond traditional drug trafficking to include lucrative schemes like fuel smuggling.
The Treasury’s actions underline the complexity of fuel smuggling in Mexico, where the CJNG engages in practices labeled as huachicol, involving the extraction and illegal trafficking of fuel. Such schemes are reportedly generating immense revenue for the cartel, enabling further criminal activities, which in turn affects the safety and financial well-being of Mexican families.
By blocking the accounts of these individuals and their network, both U.S. and Mexican authorities aim to curtail the flow of illicit money that fuels violence and corruption. This united front is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the national financial system and ensuring that essential resources reach their intended purposes without interference from criminal activities.
As the fight against fuel smuggling continues, citizens can be assured that both governments are actively working together to dismantle these illegal operations, aiming to reclaim lost revenue and restore fairness in fuel pricing and availability.
