In June 2026, Mexico made a significant step towards enhancing its national and international connectivity with the launch of 48 new air routes. This initiative, spearheaded by the Tourism Ministry (Sectur), aims to improve travel options for citizens and visitors alike, directly impacting daily life by making it easier to explore new destinations and engage in commerce.
Of the newly introduced routes, 29 serve domestic travelers while 19 connect to international destinations, creating a balanced expansion. Key new domestic connections include major cities like Acapulco to Felipe Ángeles International Airport, and Puebla to Los Cabos, all designed to boost tourism to popular cultural and beach areas.
On the international front, exciting new links have been established between AIFA and cities like Cartagena and Medellín. Additionally, routes to New York, Madrid, and Los Angeles have been fortified, fostering an influx of visitors and strengthening ties with South America, Europe, and the United States.
Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez emphasized that the airlines’ confidence in Mexico’s potential reflects the country’s growing importance as a tourism and economic hub. Airlines such as Aeroméxico and Volaris are actively participating in this endeavor.
Sectur reports a total of 102 new air route announcements for the year, reinforcing Mexico’s position as the world’s sixth most-visited country, with aspirations to climb to fifth during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. This expansion not only enhances travel options but also brings investment and development opportunities closer to communities across the nation.
