On Tuesday, the Mexican Navy announced a significant breakthrough in security operations, seizing over 300 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and around 300 kilograms of explosives in Sinaloa. This operation, which took place near Agua Verde in the municipality of Rosario, underscores a pressing public safety concern as these devices have been utilized in ongoing conflicts between rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel. The Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR) highlighted that the discovery not only minimizes the risk of violence in the area but also aims to enhance the overall safety of communities across the nation.
The operation was conducted in collaboration with the federal Security Ministry and the Federal Attorney General’s Office, demonstrating a united front against organized crime. SEMAR confirmed that specialized personnel swiftly neutralized the explosives on-site, ensuring the safety of local residents. This latest seizure serves as a continuation of efforts to improve security in a region long affected by cartel-related violence.
In a broader context, this operation follows a similar bust just two months prior, when authorities discovered more than 550 IEDs at a different location in Rosario. The rising use of IEDs reflects the intensifying conflict among factions like Los Chapitos and Los Mayos within the Sinaloa Cartel, particularly after a notorious kidnapping incident in 2024 that further escalated tensions.
The presence of these devices in Sinaloa is alarming, as they have been reported to target homes, businesses, and even police stations, exacerbating an already tense atmosphere. Official reports indicate that Sinaloa recorded the highest number of seized IEDs in the country last year, with 5,298 devices recovered, illustrating the urgent need for continued vigilance and proactive measures.
SEMAR remains committed to upholding public safety by conducting operations aimed at dismantling the tools of violence used by criminal organizations. As the government persists in its fight against organized crime, the focus will consistently remain on ensuring the security and peace of Mexican families.
