In a notable move for consumers across the country, FEMSA has announced an innovative strategy to expand its Oxxo convenience chain. This initiative involves opening new locations within existing Oxxo stores, a step aimed at addressing the growing challenge of physical space saturation in urban areas. With nearly every street corner featuring an Oxxo, this new approach offers a practical solution that could make daily shopping more convenient for everyone.
The first “Internal Oxxo” is set to debut this Friday in a flagship store in Mexico City, conveniently nestled between snack options and refrigerated beverages. This setup allows shoppers to access a full array of products, from hot coffee to quick snacks, without needing to walk to the front of the store. According to FEMSA’s Director of Retail Logistics, Fernando Treviño, this strategy reflects a commitment to enhancing customer convenience while maintaining brand consistency.
Customers will find a secondary set of automatic glass doors leading to the new internal store, which will operate independently but follow the same protocols as the main location. This means that shoppers will still need to handle purchases at the primary checkout, ensuring a familiar shopping experience is preserved.
Urban planning experts have applauded this design for its efficiency, suggesting that the nested retail model could potentially be expanded even further. FEMSA is already considering a third-tier “Micro-Oxxo,” which might be installed next to instant coffee machines, anticipated for late 2027.
Initial customer feedback has been remarkably positive. Local resident Sofia Morales expressed her enthusiasm for the added convenience, stating that the proximity of the new store saves her time and effort during her visits. With plans to establish over 12,000 of these nested locations nationwide by the end of the fiscal year, FEMSA aims to effectively double its footprint without the need for new building permits, thereby updating the shopping landscape for many Mexicans.
