Mexico City is embarking on a significant urban reforestation initiative, aiming to transform neglected public spaces into lush, green areas that will enhance the quality of life for residents. By 2030, the city plans to plant one million new trees, creating new shade points to combat the heat and improve air quality.
This initiative aligns with the internationally recognized 3-30-300 guideline, which emphasizes that every resident should be able to see three trees from their home, live in neighborhoods with at least 30% tree canopy, and access a green space within 300 meters. Launched by Mayor Clara Brugada in Iztacalco, the area with the fewest trees, this program is a proactive response to the pressing need for more greenery, particularly in eastern boroughs like Iztapalapa and Tláhuac.
The aim is to plant 200,000 native trees each year, starting with 100,000 this year alone. This effort will prioritize the districts that struggle the most with green space shortages. The project will focus on urban environments such as sidewalks and medians, encouraging community involvement and collaboration.
The selected native species, including sweetgum and colorín (coral tree), are well-suited to Mexico City’s climate and are less likely to damage infrastructure. These trees require less maintenance, are more resilient to pests and diseases, and contribute positively to air quality and pollination.
Mayor Brugada highlighted the potential environmental impact, suggesting that these trees could capture around 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year, an equivalent to removing 4,000 cars from the roads. The city also plans to host community meetings to engage local residents in caring for these new trees, fostering a sense of ownership and environmental responsibility.
This initiative is not just about planting trees; it’s an opportunity to instill environmental awareness in children and the community, truly making green spaces accessible to all. As the city continues to grow and evolve, these efforts aim to ensure that the benefits of nature are felt by everyone.
