The recent rainy season has led to the emergence of over 3,000 sinkholes across Guadalajara, causing serious disruptions on major roads and posing hazards for commuters. Road closures and traffic jams have become commonplace as SIAPA, the public water authority, works on repairs, managing only to address about half of these urgent issues due to resource constraints.
Residents should be especially cautious as some sinkholes have become notorious for their size and impact. For instance, a recent sinkhole on Malecón Avenue reached staggering dimensions of 45 meters in length and 12 meters in width, leading to extensive road closures and delays expected to last up to two months for repairs. Similarly, major thoroughfares like Enrique Díaz de León and Manuel Ávila Camacho have also suffered collapse, creating added burdens for local drivers.
