This year, attendees are particularly enthusiastic about discovering the region’s renowned mezcal, with myriad events ranging from tasting seminars to lively street parties that delve into this cherished tradition.
In the heart of Oaxaca City, the Feria del Mezcal unfolds at the Centro Cultural y de Convenciones de Oaxaca, running until July 28. This event showcases not just a wide variety of mezcals but also connects people with the producers behind these artisanal spirits. Visitors can explore an agro-industrial exhibition that highlights the cultural significance and craftsmanship involved in mezcal production.
Local business owner Glynn Pegler remarks on the noticeable improvements in this year’s Feria, citing enhanced entertainment options and stringent quality controls. He notes a marked professionalism in the displays, indicating that exhibitors have elevated their standards significantly.
Santiago Matatlán, known as the “World Capital of Mezcal,” recently celebrated its own Grand Mezcal Festival from July 23-26. This coincided with Guelaguetza festivities and the saint’s day for Santiago Apóstol on July 25. The festival filled the town square with traditional crafts, food, and exciting presentations by expert speakers, enhancing the community’s cultural tapestry.
In Matatlán, the event featured a calenda, a horseback procession, and a jaripeo, creating an immersive experience that celebrates local customs alongside mezcal appreciation. Many participants also took part in a contest recognizing the best agave hearts, measuring sweetness and quality, reinforcing the pride in local production.
