In a significant operation in Tamaulipas, authorities have seized 68,000 liters of diesel fuel, firearms, communication equipment, and 135 exotic animals from five properties linked to illegal fuel trade and wildlife trafficking. This coordinated effort involved the Mexican Navy, the Federal Attorney General’s Office, the Security Ministry, and local authorities, marking a decisive step in addressing huachicoleo, the illicit stealing and selling of fuel, which affects fuel supply and local economies.
The authorities are intensifying their fight against such crimes to alleviate the impact of fuel theft on citizens and to protect endangered species. The properties, located in Altamira and Tampico, included a storage site, an illegal gas station, and a ranch that housed various exotic animals. One individual has been arrested during the raids, which were deemed necessary for dismantling the networks behind these operations.
Among the seized animals were 35 endangered species, including spider monkeys and jaguars, alongside others such as Bengal tigers and African lions. These animals will be cared for by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection, highlighting the government’s commitment to wildlife preservation amidst the chaos of illegal trade.
