In the border city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, an exciting initiative is underway to transform hunting ranches into ecotourism destinations during the off-season of white-tailed deer hunting. This effort aims to diversify the region’s tourism revenue and provide families with new opportunities for relaxation and connection with nature. Alfredo Guarneros Carranza, the city’s Tourism Director, highlighted that the idea stemmed from discussions with the National Association of Diversified Livestock Producers. The municipal government of Nuevo Laredo has shown its support for this innovative approach.
Guarneros explained that ranch owners could utilize their properties during the off-season to attract ecotourists seeking peaceful weekend getaways or even longer stays surrounded by nature. If this project moves forward, it could supplement the hunting tourism that draws thousands of visitors to the area each year, particularly between November and February. The existing regulated hunting seasons balance conservation efforts while allowing tourists to appreciate the natural beauty of northern Tamaulipas.
The ecotourism proposal is designed to help ranches generate income throughout the year, reducing their reliance on a single hunting season. This shift aims to promote a more environmentally-conscious approach to land use and wildlife preservation. Guarneros noted that ranchers are already equipped to accommodate ecotourists, having previously provided lodging for hunters.
With options for birdwatching, sunset views, and serene morning hikes, the ranches offer a refreshing escape from urban life. Guarneros described the surrounding environment as a tranquil haven where visitors can disconnect from technology and distractions. Industry experts suggest that ecotourism is a rapidly growing segment of the travel market, outpacing traditional tourism, making it an appealing avenue for destinations like Nuevo Laredo looking to expand their offerings.
