Heavy rains in Xalapa, Veracruz, have left a significant toll, claiming two lives and causing serious flooding and landslides in numerous neighborhoods. The local community is grappling with heartbreaking losses, including a man who was killed by a landslide and a young woman tragically trapped in a flooded supermarket where she worked. Mayor Daniela Griego Ceballos confirmed that while there are currently no reports of additional serious injuries, the damage is extensive, affecting at least 43 neighborhoods and 60 homes.
Initial assessments reveal that severe rainfall has destabilized the city, with over 60 recorded incidents of flooding. The greatest rainfall measured was 135 millimeters in Lomas del Seminario. The government of Veracruz is monitoring the situation closely, as forecasts predict more rain in the coming days. Mayor Griego has urged residents, especially those in high-risk zones, to prioritize their safety by staying away from affected areas and seeking refuge with relatives or in designated shelters.
Given the persistent risks from waterlogged ground and ongoing rainfall, conditions could deteriorate further. In response to the challenges faced by businesses impacted by the flooding, the Ministry of Economic and Port Development (Sedecop) announced it would conduct a survey of affected local businesses. The aim is to assess damages and develop a proposal for financial support to aid recovery efforts. The head of Sedecop, Ernesto Pérez Astorga, indicated that they are committed to helping small merchants and businesses rebuild in the wake of this disaster.
