In an unsettling incident that has caught national attention, a currency exchange in Puebla was targeted by thieves, highlighting ongoing security concerns for residents and business owners alike. The robbery occurred on Sunday night in the Santa Cruz Buenavista neighborhood, where a group of criminals executed a plan that, disturbingly, resembled a scene from a heist movie. They managed to drill a hole to gain entry into the establishment, bypassing security measures, and made off with an estimated 1 million pesos, roughly equivalent to $57,616 USD.
It wasn’t until employees reported for duty on Monday morning that the theft was uncovered, with a discovery of a hole leading from a neighboring physiotherapy clinic into the exchange’s bathroom area. This brazen act was the second incident involving this specific currency exchange in less than a month, raising alarms and prompting further investigation by local authorities.
The manner in which the robbery was executed is attracting comparisons to the popular Netflix series “La Casa de Papel,” further fueling public interest. According to initial reports, the perpetrators wore clothing that concealed their identities and first accessed the physiotherapy clinic, from which they drilled through the wall connecting it to the currency exchange’s restroom.
In what appears to be a carefully orchestrated operation, the criminals removed a door to obstruct the view of the interior security cameras, allowing them to navigate through the cash storage area without triggering alarms. The Puebla State Attorney General’s Office is actively seeking physical evidence, analyzing the route taken by the thieves, and reviewing footage from surveillance cameras in the vicinity.
Despite ongoing efforts, authorities have not disclosed how many individuals were involved in this robbery, and the suspects remain at large.
