Rocío Sánchez, a talented painter and sculptor from Guanajuato, started her artistic journey at just ten years old when she decided to portray Gandhi for a school competition that commemorated the 1967 International Year of Peace. This early experience instilled in her a profound understanding that art could convey deep emotions. Today, over fifty years later, Sánchez continues to inspire and touch lives through her artwork, which has reached audiences not only in Mexico but also in cities like Paris, Florence, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Born in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Sánchez benefited from the mentorship of renowned Mexican artist Luis Sahagún Cortés, who nurtured her talent without seeking payment. His influence helped her secure scholarships at both state and federal levels, allowing her to showcase her work across various galleries, including a notable exhibition in Paris for Casa de Mexico. Sánchez’s artistic vision aims to blend her work with the landscapes around her, exemplified by her sculpture “The Queen of the Seas” on the malecón in La Paz.
Since moving to Guanajuato in 2017, she has focused on her project titled “The Journey of Consciousness,” which centers on promoting self-knowledge through art, nature, and technology. Her home and garden are adorned with her creations, echoing her dream of fostering awareness through art.
Her versatile style includes various media, such as acrylics, oils, pastels, and even digital arts, reflecting her adaptability. In 2025, she collaborated with Spanish poet Julie Sopetrán to illustrate a book of erotic poetry titled “Las Cuatro Estaciones” (“The Four Seasons”). This partnership not only showcases her artistic range but also highlights her belief in the dialogue between literature and visual art.
Sánchez emphasizes that her work, while sometimes erotic, transcends mere human sexuality and explores the sensual ties between humanity and nature. An exhibition of her illustrations was held in Guanajuato’s Casa Gene Byron Museum, further broadening her reach to audiences eager to engage with her unique perspectives.
Her daily routine varies according to the discipline she is working on, whether it’s creating sculpture or painting. She embraces the evolving landscape of art, which now often extends into virtual realms, acknowledging the changing dynamics in how art is presented and consumed. Her participation in the “Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro” federal program not only supports her practice but also empowers aspiring artists, providing them with a space to grow.
Rocío Sánchez embodies the spirit of a modern artist, drawing inspiration from the world around her while contributing to the rich tapestry of Mexican art and culture. Her journey reminds us of the profound connections that art fosters among individuals and communities.
