Early Sunday morning, the Kukulcán Interchange officially opened in Cancún, a significant step toward improving daily travel for residents and visitors alike. Spearheaded by Governor Mara Lezama, this new connector enhances the traffic flow between Cancún International Airport, the Nichupté Bridge, and the bustling hotel zone, promising more efficient journeys and less time spent on the road.
This state-led initiative comes on the heels of the recently inaugurated Nichupté Bridge, a vital infrastructure project designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. With a length of 11.2 kilometers and three lanes alongside a dedicated bike path, this bridge connects residential neighborhoods directly to the tourist hub, effectively reducing commuting times by as much as 50 minutes for thousands of daily travelers.
The Kukulcán Interchange introduces an elevated one-way road facilitating access to the airport from Kukulcán Boulevard. For those traveling downtown, the new design allows for a seamless merge onto the Nichupté Bridge. Traffic patterns have been restructured, directing vehicles from the airport towards a designated one-way street behind Plaza Kukulcán, while maintaining a continuous route for cars traveling from the bridge back to the airport.
In order to improve safety and control traffic flow, the U-turn near La Joya Hospital will remain restricted to local vehicles only. During the unveiling, Governor Lezama underscored the importance of this project within the broader framework of infrastructure improvements in the region, asserting that the corresponding lane of the interchange is anticipated to open shortly.
Governor Lezama also expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has prioritized development projects like the Nichupté Bridge and the Kukulcán Interchange. This collaborative effort illustrates a commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure in Cancún, benefiting both residents and tourists in their daily travels.
