Mexico's ICE Death Cases Rise: 20 Complaints and UN Involvement

Last week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico took significant legal action by filing 20 complaints in U.S. courts concerning the deaths of Mexican citizens while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This move comes after two troubling incidents—the loss of 17 lives in ICE detention centers since May 2025 and additional fatalities during ICE operations—which directly impact families in Mexico, creating a ripple effect of grief and concern among loved ones and communities.

In a recent statement, President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized the need for thorough investigations into these deaths, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability. These complaints were officially lodged by Ambassador Roberto Lazzeri in jurisdictions across several states, including Arizona, California, and Texas, seeking justice for those who have lost their lives under circumstances that demand scrutiny.

In a proactive outreach to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Mexican government has sought updates on the progress of these investigations and the conditions in which detainees are held. Ambassador Lazzeri’s discussions with U.S. officials have also raised concerns about the conditions in ICE detention centers, which many believe have contributed to these tragic outcomes.

Following the death of Alejandro Cabrera Clemente earlier this year, President Sheinbaum urged consulates in the U.S. to increase their frequency of visits to detention centers. Originally scheduled once a week, these visits are now intended to occur daily, ensuring that the health and wellbeing of Mexican detainees are monitored closely.

These deaths have occurred against the backdrop of an aggressive immigration enforcement strategy by the previous U.S. administration, leading to calls within Mexico for a rethinking of how immigration is addressed. Sheinbaum stated that while those who break the law should be held accountable, migration itself should not be criminalized.

Additionally, in a letter sent to the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, México’s Foreign Affairs Minister Roberto Velasco requested that the U.N. investigate these incidents and determine their compatibility with international human rights norms.

As Mexico navigates these legal and diplomatic avenues, the lives of affected families remain at the forefront. The government’s commitment to seeking justice and ensuring humane treatment for all migrants is evident as they work to foster better relations with U.S. authorities. The situation reflects a broader concern for the dignity and safety of Mexican citizens, emphasizing the need for international cooperation to address immigration challenges humanely.
