In a significant operation aimed at combating drug trafficking, the Navy of Mexico recently seized over a tonne of suspected cocaine off the coasts of Chiapas and Oaxaca, impacting the ongoing struggle against organized crime. This effort, which resulted in the arrest of one individual, reflects the government’s commitment to protecting communities from the dangers associated with drug trafficking and reducing the resources available to criminal organizations.
Security Minister Omar García Harfuch confirmed the operations on social media, emphasizing that the seizures occurred during maritime patrol in the Pacific Ocean. Investigators reported a total of 1,149 kilograms of cocaine-like substances, which were found in two separate operations, each involving 16 packages. The total included the weight of the packaging, with the exact amount of narcotics to be verified by prosecutors.
The financial implications of this seizure are substantial, estimated at around 273 million pesos, which translates to approximately 14.5 million US dollars. García Harfuch noted that each confiscated shipment represents a direct economic setback for criminal groups, limiting their ability to fund violent activities and distribute drugs in local neighborhoods.
While the quantity of drugs confiscated is noteworthy, authorities highlighted the arrest of only one person in connection with these operations. This individual has been informed of their rights and is currently in the custody of the Federal Attorney General’s Office.
This recent seizure is part of ongoing maritime and aerial surveillance efforts against international drug trafficking in the Pacific corridor, which spans the coastlines of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Michoacán. Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, the government has intensified these operations, with previous actions resulting in the confiscation of more than 97 tonnes of cocaine since October 2024. Recent months have seen further successes, including a notable seizure of over 1.2 tonnes of cocaine in a joint operation with U.S. authorities just last October.
The commitment to halting the flow of illegal drugs remains a critical aspect of security cooperation between Mexico and the United States, addressing one of the foremost challenges in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of citizens across the nation.
