On Sunday, the third edition of the Binational Race San Diego-Tijuana will take place, marking a significant moment as it offers participants the choice of three different race distances, including two that span the U.S.-Mexico border. This celebration is not just about running; it emphasizes the deep cultural ties and friendships binding communities on both sides of the border.
Athletes can select from a 21-kilometer half marathon starting at the Las Américas shopping center in San Diego, a 12-kilometer race, also beginning in San Diego, or a 10-kilometer course that kicks off in Tijuana. Organizers Benjamin Castillo and Valeria Rivera expect a record turnout of about 4,500 runners, a number that reflects the growing enthusiasm and unity in cross-border events.
Approximately 3,000 participants are set to tackle the half marathon, while 1,000 will run the 12K, and 500 will take on the 10K. The race will also see around 150 volunteers aiding runners, highlighting the community spirit that underpins this event. Castillo expressed hope that the race will establish itself as an annual tradition, with registration for the next edition scheduled to open this weekend.
More than just a sporting event, the Binational Race embodies a celebration of culture, fostering social connections between San Diego and Tijuana. City officials from both areas have supported the initiative from its inception, ensuring a smooth collaboration to showcase the best of both communities.
The event partners with various nonprofits and charities on both sides of the border, including notable organizations such as Laboratorios Delia Barraza and the Xolos de Tijuana soccer club, reinforcing the sense of community that the race champions.
The half marathon commences at 6:50 a.m. while the 12K and 10K events start at 8:30 a.m., with all races concluding at the picturesque Playas de Tijuana Lighthouse. The half marathon route offers a scenic experience, allowing participants to traverse the Tijuana River Valley Regional Park and ultimately cross into Mexico at the bustling San Ysidro–El Chaparral international checkpoint, where they will enjoy a warm welcome from a mariachi band.
As the runners make their way from the Tijuana Viaduct, they are treated to breathtaking views of San Diego before facing Enchilada Hill, a notable challenge on their route. Once they conquer this climb, it’s a downhill sprint to the finish line at Playas de Tijuana, positioning this race as a unique cross-border experience.
This year’s Binational Race stands out as the longest U.S.-Mexico race, with El Paso and Ciudad Juárez also hosting cross-border events in the past. Community members are invited to participate in this extraordinary event, which showcases the unity and spirit of the cities involved.
