In response to the tragic murder of two teenage students from High School No. 2 of the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a special security plan for Morelos. This plan aims to enhance safety in the wake of violence that has deeply affected families and the educational community. The incident occurred on Sunday in Cuernavaca, leaving another student injured and raising urgent concerns about safety in school environments.
During a recent press conference, President Sheinbaum expressed her commitment to coordinating with Morelos Governor Margarita González Saravia to identify specific needs for support. She also revealed that Interior Minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez had reached out to UAEM’s rector, Viridiana Aydeé León Hernández, to better understand the challenges facing the university community. The government recognizes the necessity of proactive measures to protect students and restore confidence.
The gravity of the situation is underscored by statistics from the Public Security and Citizen Protection Ministry (SSPC), indicating a decrease in intentional homicides in Morelos, yet an increase in theft-related crimes. These contrasting trends add to the complexity of ensuring student safety. Since April 2025, seven UAEM-affiliated students have lost their lives to violence, including Claudia Tacoronte, a Spanish exchange student who was murdered after a robbery in Cuautla.
Cuernavaca Mayor José Luis Urióstegui Salgado has acknowledged the shortcomings of the current municipal security strategy. He noted that police visibility has diminished, allowing criminal activity to flourish. In response, he has urged security forces to intensify their efforts and indicated a willingness to reassess police operations and leadership if improvements aren’t realized in the coming weeks.
