A significant advancement for farmers in Mexico comes from a 20-year-old engineering student from Chihuahua. Luis Ángel Robles Morales has developed an innovative irrigation filter that aims to help drought-affected farmers by maximizing water efficiency. His company, OAKs Filtration, recently receiving the prestigious 2026 Eugenio Garza Sada Award for student social innovation, will receive a prize of 1 million pesos, about $59,121. This accolade not only honors his ingenuity but also highlights the pressing issue of water scarcity in regions like Chihuahua, where farmers depend heavily on efficient irrigation to sustain their crops.
Robles, a mechatronics student at Tecnológico de Monterrey’s Chihuahua campus, builds on a family legacy in farming and irrigation. His grandfather cultivated crops such as corn and chilies, while his father focused on producing irrigation filters. Robles’ innovation is crucial as the state faces an alarming rainfall deficit, receiving just 247.6 millimeters from January to August this year, 11.7% less than in 2022. As of mid-August, nearly 28.3% of Chihuahua was experiencing drought, making efficient water use more vital than ever for local farmers.
The OAKs filter is designed to prevent clogs that often lead to water waste and high maintenance costs. By using a carbon-steel outer casing and a PVC internal filtering element, the filter offers two to three times more filtration area compared to traditional systems. This advancement allows it to function effectively longer without pressure loss, thus benefiting farmers significantly. Already, over 500 farmers in Chihuahua’s south-central region are reportedly experiencing improvements thanks to Robles’ invention.
Recognizing the broader impact of his work, Robles plans to allocate half of his prize money to further develop OAKs and invest the remainder in an international entrepreneurial opportunity. This commitment not only reflects a personal aspiration for growth but also a dedication to supporting the agricultural community he hails from. The Eugenio Garza Sada Award, established in 1993 by Tec de Monterrey and FEMSA, has recognized 81 innovators since its inception, reinforcing the importance of social innovation in addressing real-world challenges across Mexico.
