The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has officially recognized the Aguacate Franja Michoacán, or Michoacán Avocado Belt, as a Protected Geographical Indication. This recognition, presented during a ceremony, not only celebrates a valued agricultural tradition but also stands to impact the daily lives of many people in Michoacán, a region responsible for 68% of Mexico’s avocado production, generating over 150,000 direct and indirect jobs.
This designation, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on May 4, aims to enhance the authenticity and market positioning of Hass avocados from the specific area of Michoacán. The protection will cover 31 municipalities where avocado cultivation has thrived since the 19th century, reinforcing the uniqueness of the avocados due to the region’s specific geographic and climatic conditions.
Hass avocados grown here are known for their distinct qualities, including an oval shape, rough skin, creamy pulp, and high oil content. The protection will certify the origin, quality, and reputation of these avocados, making them stand out from similar products grown outside the designated area.
In recent years, Michoacán has evolved from traditional avocado farming to a consolidated agro-industry, with approximately 48,000 producers and 94 packing plants. This shift not only signifies economic growth but also aligns with the vision of the Government of Mexico to support regional economies. Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard emphasized that geographical indications play a crucial role in fostering social economies and fulfilling the government’s economic objectives.
The endorsement is expected to bolster economic development in the region, providing greater visibility and added value to local Hass avocados. These avocados are particularly nutritious, rich in healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, promoting various health benefits, including heart health and better digestion.
