The Baja California Sur State Civil Protection Council has made the important decision to suspend school activities in La Paz, Los Cabos, and Comondú due to forecasts of intense rain and high winds, which could lead to rising streams and flooding. This measure is intended to protect the safety of students, teachers, and families during their commutes. Meanwhile, schools in Loreto and Mulegé will operate as usual, offering some stability amid the weather disruptions.
The decision affects all educational levels, both public and private, during both morning and afternoon schedules. Officials from the Government of Mexico have stated that the suspension is a preventative action in light of the ongoing adverse weather conditions linked to the Mexican monsoon and the recent passage of Hurricane Marie, expected to bring heavy rains through Tuesday.
To ensure the safety of residents, the Los Cabos City Council has opened four temporary shelters for those in vulnerable areas or near waterways, providing a safe haven from the anticipated weather challenges. Two shelters are in Cabo San Lucas, and two more are in San José del Cabo.
Access to the sea has been restricted along the beaches in Los Cabos, as well as in La Paz from El Comitán to El Caimancito. Food sales on public roads have also been suspended as part of these precautionary measures. Authorities are warning residents that waterways may rise unexpectedly due to runoff, even without rainfall in the immediate area, highlighting that just 30 centimeters of current can carry away a vehicle.
The Civil Protection authorities are urging everyone in affected areas to avoid crossing flooded streets and streams, refrain from entering restricted ocean areas, and follow official guidance from Civil Protection and the National Water Commission.
