A potential investment from a Chinese automaker in San Luis Potosí could bring significant benefits to the local economy, impacting employment and industry growth. Alberto Rosales Reyna, president of the San Luis Potosí Automotive Cluster, shared that discussions have begun involving various Asian automakers, including those from China, contemplating establishing operations in the state. Although no plans have been officially confirmed, the prospect of a new automotive plant is encouraging, especially given the presence of established companies like BMW and General Motors in the region.
Rosales highlighted that a substantial investment aimed at boosting local production could soon materialize. The state’s strategic location, skilled workforce, and supportive government policies position San Luis Potosí as an appealing destination for foreign investment. While specific names of interested automakers were not disclosed, the cluster president expressed confidence in the state’s capacity to attract major players in the industry.
Among the names mentioned in discussions is BYD, known as the largest electric vehicle manufacturer worldwide. Yet, as of now, no Chinese automaker has set up production in Mexico, though local company Giant Motors Latinoamérica is currently assembling vehicles for JAC, another Chinese manufacturer, in Hidalgo.
In conjunction with these developments, the upcoming Automotive Connection Potosí 2026 event aims to create business opportunities exceeding $100 million. Scheduled for November 11 and 12, this networking event, organized by the San Luis Potosí Automotive Cluster and the state Ministry of Economic Development, will host over 500 suppliers and facilitate more than 1,500 meetings between buyers and companies in the automotive sector. This initiative is designed to enhance local companies’ access to international buyers and foster growth in new productive projects, furthering the economic landscape of San Luis Potosí.
