Money is a vital part of everyday life for those residing or visiting Mexico. Recognizing this, a new weekly series titled “Mexico and My Money” has been launched to explore personal finance issues relevant to many. This initiative aims to shed light on how individuals navigate their financial lives in this diverse and changing landscape.
Recently, a survey involving over 700 expatriates living across 25 states in Mexico revealed some revealing insights into their financial habits. Despite a general skepticism toward Mexican banks, a significant 71% of participants reported owning a home in the country. Furthermore, nearly 80% have made various investments, ranging from real estate to business ventures and financial markets. However, these positive aspects are shadowed by the fact that around 20% of respondents experienced financial crime, sharing experiences from false landlord practices to theft by domestic workers over prolonged periods.
In the latest episode of “Confidently Wrong,” the discussion delves further into these findings. The conversation covers key elements of banking in Mexico, including the pros and cons of using cash versus credit cards, as well as common mistakes expats wish to avoid. This exploration not only brings forth lessons learned but also highlights effective strategies for managing finances in a new setting. Overall, the series aims to provide valuable insights and support for a community that continues to grow and evolve within Mexico.
